A horrific video of two women being paraded naked on a road by a group of men in Manipur has been shared widely on social media, drawing massive condemnation and calls for action. The two women were gang-raped in a nearby field, a tribal organisation has alleged.

The incident happened on May 4 in Kangpokpi district, some 35 km from state capital Imphal, according a statement by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF).

A day before this on-camera horror, clashes broke out between the valley-majority Meitei and the hill-majority Kuki tribe over the Meiteis’ demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status.

The ITLF, which addresses the Kuki clan, in the explanation said the two ladies have a place with the Kuki-Zo clan.

“A video which turned into a web sensation today shows an enormous Meitei horde strutting two Kuki-Zo ancestral ladies exposed toward a paddy field to be assaulted. The abhorrent scene, which occurred on May 4 in Kangpokpi locale, shows the men continually attacking the defenseless ladies, who cry and beg their capturers,” the ITLF said in the articulation.

“The stunning experience endured by these guiltless ladies is enhanced by the culprits’ choice to share the video, which shows the character of the people in question, via online entertainment,” the ITLF said, and spoke to the Public Commission for Ladies and the Public Commission for Planned Clans to make a move.

The Manipur Police have not given an explanation regarding this situation yet, whether anybody has been captured or a case has been documented.

Political pioneers and others have communicated shock over the Manipur episode via virtual entertainment and asked the middle and the state government to make a move against the men engaged with the horrendous demonstration.
